Is Cancun Safe? An Honest Guide for 2026

An honest look at safety in Cancun in 2026: the US advisory level for Quintana Roo, where tourists are and aren't affected, scams to avoid, and sea safety.

The short answer

Cancun is generally safe for visitors who take ordinary precautions. The US State Department places Quintana Roo at Level 2, “exercise increased caution”, the same band as plenty of popular destinations. The sea is the risk I would take more seriously than the club strip.

RiskHow likely for visitorsWhat to do
Rough sea and currentsThe most common real dangerObey beach flags; swim near lifeguards
Petty theftModerateDon’t leave valuables on the beach
Taxi overchargingCommonAgree the fare first or use an app
Timeshare pitchesVery common at the airportWalk past the desks in arrivals
Criminal violenceLow for tourists, but it happensAvoid drugs; avoid isolated areas at night

Advisories

The US, Canada and the UK all publish advice for Mexico by state. Their main concern in Quintana Roo is crime linked to the drug trade, which has occasionally affected tourist areas. Read your government’s current advice before you travel.

Practical precautions

  • Use registered taxis, app rides or a pre-booked transfer.
  • Don’t buy drugs.
  • Use ATMs inside banks or shopping centres.
  • Keep a copy of your passport, and the original in your hotel safe.
  • At the airport, walk past the “information” desks in arrivals; many sell timeshares.

Sea safety

Drownings happen every year on Cancun’s open east-coast beaches. Swim only where lifeguards are on duty, respect red and black flags, and use the calmer north-side beaches if you’re not a strong swimmer.
