The bus is the easy answer
Inside Cancun, the R-1 and R-2 buses are the cheapest and simplest way to move. They run the full length of the Hotel Zone along Boulevard Kukulcán and into downtown, day and night. Carry coins. Drivers often cannot break a big note, and I would not bet a morning on that.
| Option | Cost | Pay with | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| R-1 / R-2 (classic bus) | 12 MXN | Pesos, cash | 24 hours; flag down anywhere on the boulevard |
| MOBI bus, Hotel Zone | 18 MXN (reported Oct 2026) | Card, MOBI card or app only | Newer state system |
| Taxi | Agree or check fare first | Cash usually | Plentiful in the Hotel Zone |
| Uber / DiDi | App fare | Card or cash in app | Licensed in Quintana Roo |
| ADO coach | By route | Cash or card | Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Valladolid, airport |
| Ultramar ferry | 290 MXN one way, adult | Card or cash | Isla Mujeres |
R-1 and R-2
- R-1 runs from downtown along Avenida Tulum (past the ADO terminal) and through the whole Hotel Zone to Playa Delfines and beyond. Some buses continue north toward Puerto Juárez.
- R-2 shares the Hotel Zone stretch but heads into the city via Avenida Kabah, near Walmart and the Mercado 28 area.
Pay the driver as you board. The authorised fare is 12 MXN; an increase was announced and then frozen, so if the posted fare is different, pay what’s posted. Drivers often can’t change big notes, so carry coins. There are no free transfers between buses.
MOBI
Quintana Roo’s newer MOBI buses, in pink, also run in the Hotel Zone. They don’t take cash: pay with a bank card, a MOBI card (sold at OXXO stores) or an app ticket. The two systems don’t mix.
Taxis
Taxis are everywhere in the Hotel Zone. Agree the fare before you get in, or ask your hotel’s front desk what a fair price is for your trip. Fares in the Hotel Zone are higher than downtown.
Uber and DiDi
Both work in Cancun. Quintana Roo requires app drivers to hold a permit, and Uber says its service runs 24/7, including airport pick-ups. Hotel pick-up points can be at the main entrance or roadside; follow the app.
Coaches for day trips
ADO’s downtown terminal on Avenida Tulum is the hub for Playa del Carmen (about 1 hour 20), Valladolid (about 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30) and Tulum (about 2 hours 40). Buy tickets at the terminal or on ADO’s site.
Ferries
For Isla Mujeres, Ultramar sails from Puerto Juárez (north of downtown) roughly every half hour, and from Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol in the Hotel Zone less often. The adult fare is the same from all three: 290 MXN one way, 580 MXN return, plus a municipal fee. See the Isla Mujeres guide.
Renting a car
You don’t need a car in Cancun itself. It can make sense for inland days with several stops, such as Chichén Itzá plus cenotes and Valladolid. Rental companies can add compulsory Mexican liability insurance at the counter, so read what’s included before you book.
