The quick list

Every beach in Mexico is public, so you can use any beach in Cancun whether or not you are staying there. These are the ones with public access, easy to reach by the R-1 bus. If you like a flat morning run, Playa Delfines has the long sand. If you want a swim you can actually relax in, go north.

Playa Delfines

The best-known public beach in Cancun, with a wide strip of sand, open Caribbean water and almost no buildings behind it. Above the beach is El Mirador, the viewpoint with the colourful Cancun letters. The sea here can be rough; watch the warning flags and swim only where lifeguards are on duty.

The north-side beaches

From downtown to Punta Cancún the Hotel Zone faces north toward Isla Mujeres. Playa Langosta and Playa Tortugas have gentle water and are popular with local families on weekends. Tortugas is also where some Isla Mujeres ferries leave. These beaches are usually less affected by sargassum.

Punta Cancún

Playa Gaviota Azul and Playa Caracol sit around the point where the Hotel Zone turns south. They’re handy if you’re staying near the Party Center and want a beach within walking distance.

Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres

Shallow, clear and calm, Playa Norte is the beach many people come to Cancun for without realising it’s on another island. It’s a 20-minute ferry ride and a short walk from the pier. See Isla Mujeres from Cancun.

Beach safety

  • Flags: green means safe, yellow caution, red dangerous, black closed. The east-coast beaches can have strong currents.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen is required on some tours and protected areas; it’s a good idea everywhere.
  • Don’t leave valuables unattended on the sand.
