What you need to know
Sargassum can turn a postcard beach brown, and it is patchy: it changes by beach, by day and by season. It does not cancel a Cancun trip. It is worth planning around if you are travelling between spring and late summer.
| What it is | Free-floating brown seaweed from the Atlantic |
| Worst months recently | Spring and summer |
| October 2026 | Mostly low levels on Cancun beaches |
| Usually less affected | North Hotel Zone beaches, Playa Mujeres, Isla Mujeres’ Playa Norte |
| Usually more affected | The open east coast of the Hotel Zone and the Riviera Maya |
| Where to check | SEMAR daily bulletin; Quintana Roo’s sargassum traffic-light reports |
Why it happens
Sargassum grows in a huge belt across the tropical Atlantic and drifts west with currents and wind. Mexican press reported a record amount collected along the Mexican Caribbean in 2025, and in October 2026 El Economista reported that authorities now expect waves of it throughout the year rather than in a single season.
Which beaches are better
The Hotel Zone is shaped like a “7”. The short top arm, from downtown to Punta Cancún, faces north toward Isla Mujeres; beaches such as Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol are sheltered from the open sea. In October 2026, local press listed Playa Delfines, Tortugas, Langosta, Las Perlas and Caracol at minimal or very low levels.
Isla Mujeres’ Playa Norte and the Playa Mujeres coast also face away from the main drift. When the east-coast beaches are bad, these are the first places to try.
How to check
- SEMAR: Mexico’s Navy publishes a daily sargassum bulletin.
- Quintana Roo monitoring: the state publishes a traffic-light (semáforo) map by beach. Green is low, yellow moderate, orange and red heavy.
- Ask your hotel: many resorts on the east coast rake the beach early every morning and install offshore barriers in heavy season.
Does sargassum affect swimming?
Fresh seaweed in the water is mostly a nuisance. Piles rotting on the beach smell of sulphur and attract sand flies, which is why crews clear them quickly. Part of the Visitax you pay goes into a state fund that includes sargassum control and beach recovery.
Frequently asked questions
When is sargassum season in Cancun?
It has been heaviest from spring through summer in recent years, but it can now arrive in any month.
Is there sargassum in Cancun right now?
Check the SEMAR bulletin or the state’s daily traffic-light map. On 24 October 2026, Cancun was mostly green (low).
Which Cancun hotels avoid sargassum?
Hotels on the north-facing part of the Hotel Zone and in Playa Mujeres are usually less exposed, but no beach is guaranteed to be free of it.
Is Isla Mujeres better for sargassum?
Playa Norte usually gets less, because it faces away from the open sea.
