Your options at a glance
Most visitors take a pre-booked transfer or the ADO bus. The airport is about 20 minutes by road from the Hotel Zone and 25 from downtown. I would take the bus in daylight with a small bag, and a pre-booked car if the flight lands late.
| Option | Goes to | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ADO bus to downtown | ADO Centro terminal | 145 MXN (ADO, 21 Oct 2026); fares vary by departure | Budget, light luggage, daytime |
| ADO bus to Hotel Zone | Punta Cancún stop, around km 9 | From about 170 MXN (ADO listing) | Hotels near Punta Cancún |
| ADO bus + R-1 | Anywhere in the Hotel Zone | ADO fare + 12 MXN cash | Budget, any Hotel Zone hotel |
| Private transfer | Your hotel door | Varies by operator and group size | Families, late arrivals, Playa Mujeres |
| Airport taxi | Your hotel door | Set by the airport taxi desks | No booking |
ADO buses
ADO is the only scheduled bus company at CUN. Its platforms are outside Terminals 2, 3 and 4, just beyond the arrivals exits; Terminal 1 has no ADO stop of its own. Buy a ticket at the counter or on ADO’s website. Tickets include luggage in the hold.
- To downtown: buses run frequently through the day to the ADO Centro terminal. On 21 October 2026 ADO’s site showed 145 MXN and about 45 minutes, with the last departure at 23:00.
- To the Hotel Zone: a smaller number of daily departures stop at Punta Cancún. ADO says tickets start at about 170 MXN.
- Down the coast: ADO also runs direct to Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
From the downtown terminal, the R-1 city bus runs through the Hotel Zone for 12 MXN cash. Bring coins or small notes.
Private transfers
A transfer booked before you fly means a driver waiting in arrivals and a ride straight to your hotel. It’s the easiest option for groups, for resorts in Playa Mujeres or the far south of the Hotel Zone, and for anyone landing after the last bus. Compare operators using the transfer links on this page; prices depend on vehicle and group size.
Ignore the sales desks inside the terminal offering “free” transfers: they’re commonly linked to timeshare presentations. Walk through to the exit where your driver or the ADO platform will be.
Taxis and apps
Airport taxis use set fares from desks in the terminals. Uber says its app works in Cancun around the clock, including airport pick-ups, and Quintana Roo has licensed app drivers since 2023. Pick-up points at the airport can be strict, so check the app’s instructions.
The Tren Maya
The Tren Maya has a station in the airport grounds with services toward Playa del Carmen and inland toward Valladolid and Chichén Itzá. Timetables have changed often since it opened; check the official booking site, and carry your passport.
