Go between December and April for the driest weather. Go in May or November if you want fewer crowds. Cancun is warm all year, so the real variables are rain, storms, seaweed and prices. I would rather tell you that than call any month perfect.

Hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and the most active stretch is usually August to October. Most weeks pass without a storm, but if you travel in these months, buy travel insurance that covers weather disruption and keep an eye on forecasts from Mexico’s weather service and the US National Hurricane Center.

Sargassum

Sargassum is brown seaweed that drifts onto Caribbean beaches. In recent years it’s been heaviest in spring and summer, but Quintana Roo now monitors it year-round, and local press reported in October 2026 that arrivals are no longer strictly seasonal. On 24 October 2026 Cancun’s beaches were mostly at low levels. The Hotel Zone’s north-facing beaches (between Punta Cancún and downtown) and Playa Mujeres tend to be less exposed than the open east coast. See the sargassum guide.

Whale shark season

If swimming with whale sharks is on your list, the authorised season in Quintana Roo ran from 15 May to 17 September in 2026. See the whale shark tour.
