What to eat
Cancun sits on the Yucatán Peninsula, and the food worth crossing town for is Yucatecan. Cochinita, panuchos, sopa de lima. The Hotel Zone will feed you, but it will not taste like the peninsula.
| Dish | What it is |
|---|---|
| Cochinita pibil | Pork slow-cooked in achiote and bitter orange, often in tacos or tortas |
| Panuchos | Fried tortillas stuffed with black beans and topped with meat |
| Salbutes | Puffed fried tortillas with toppings |
| Sopa de lima | Chicken and lime soup |
| Poc chuc | Grilled marinated pork |
| Marquesitas | Crisp rolled crêpes, classically with Edam cheese, sold at night |
| Ceviche and aguachile | Raw seafood cured in lime |
| Tacos al pastor | Spit-roasted pork tacos |
Where to eat
Parque de las Palapas
Downtown’s main square comes alive in the evening with food stalls selling marquesitas, quesadillas, esquites and other snacks. It’s where Cancun families go.
Mercado 28
A market near Avenida Tulum with souvenir shops and a ring of inexpensive restaurants serving seafood and Mexican dishes.
Downtown taquerías
The streets around Avenida Tulum and Avenida Yaxchilán are full of taquerías. Go where the locals are queuing.
The Hotel Zone
Expect international restaurants, steakhouses and seafood places, with resort-level prices. La Isla shopping centre and the Punta Cancún area have the biggest choice.
Tips
- Check whether service is included; a 10–15% tip is usual when it isn’t.
- Many small places take cash only.
- Drink bottled or filtered water.
