Overview

South of Punta Nizuc, the coast continues past the airport toward Puerto Morelos. This stretch, often sold as Riviera Cancun, has a handful of very large resorts and little else. I would pick it for a short stay or a family that does not plan to leave the property. I would not pick it if you want to walk to dinner.

Why stay here

  • A short transfer from Cancun airport.
  • Big resorts with everything on site, good for families who don’t plan to leave.
  • Closer to the Ruta de los Cenotes, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Downsides

  • Little to walk to outside your resort.
  • The Hotel Zone’s restaurants and nightlife are a taxi ride away.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Riviera Cancun from the airport?

It is a short transfer from Cancun International (CUN). The Hotel Zone’s southern end is about 20 minutes from the airport by road; this coast is closer still.

Can I walk to restaurants?

Not really. These are large resorts with food on site. The Hotel Zone’s restaurants are a taxi ride north.

Is Moon Palace in this area?

Yes. Moon Palace is the most-reviewed hotel on this site’s Cancun list, and it sits on this southern coast.
