Cancun in one minute
Cancun is two places. The Hotel Zone is a 22 km beach strip of resorts along Boulevard Kukulcán. Downtown is the working city on the mainland. Most visitors stay on the strip for the Caribbean. Downtown is where the cheaper rooms, markets and taquerías are. The R-1 and R-2 buses link them around the clock.
Quick facts
| Airport | Cancun International (CUN), about 20 minutes by road from the Hotel Zone |
| Currency | Mexican peso (MXN); US dollars are accepted in tourist areas at poor rates |
| Tourist fee | Visitax, 293 MXN per foreign visitor per trip (2026) |
| City bus | R-1/R-2 along the Hotel Zone, 12 MXN cash |
| Time zone | Quintana Roo stays on UTC−5 all year, an hour ahead of neighbouring Yucatán |
| Main day trips | Isla Mujeres, Chichén Itzá, cenotes, Tulum, Isla Contoy |
Where to stay
The Hotel Zone is the obvious choice for a beach holiday. The northern end, between Punta Cancún and around km 9, is the busiest, with the Party Center, malls and the ferry piers. Further south the beach faces the open Caribbean, the hotels get bigger and the evenings quieter.
Downtown Cancun has no beach of its own but gives you Parque de las Palapas, Mercado 28 and the ADO bus terminal for day trips. It suits budget travellers and people who want local food.
North of the city, Playa Mujeres is a newer strip of large all-inclusives. South, Riviera Cancun is close to the airport. Our where to stay guide compares them in detail, and the hotel list ranks every hotel on this site by Tripadvisor score and review count.
Getting in and around
ADO buses leave CUN Terminals 2, 3 and 4 for the downtown ADO terminal and, on fewer departures, for a stop in the Hotel Zone. Fares vary by departure, so check ADO’s site. A pre-booked transfer is easier with luggage or a late arrival; see Cancun airport transfers.
Once you’re there, the R-1 and R-2 buses cover the whole Hotel Zone for 12 MXN cash. Uber and DiDi operate in Cancun. Details in getting around Cancun.
Fees to know about
Quintana Roo charges foreign visitors the Visitax: 293 MXN per person in 2026, children and infants included, paid once per trip at visitax.gob.mx. It isn’t included in flights or all-inclusive packages. Hotels also add a municipal environmental fee per room per night. See the Visitax guide.
When to go
December to April is the dry season and the busiest time. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Sargassum seaweed can reach the beaches in any month now, though it has been heaviest in spring and summer. Read best time to visit Cancun and the sargassum guide.
Day trips
- Isla Mujeres: Ultramar ferries take about 20 minutes from Puerto Juárez; an adult ticket is 290 MXN each way. Isla Mujeres guide.
- Chichén Itzá: about 200 km inland. Foreign visitors pay 697 MXN at the gate in 2026. Chichén Itzá guide.
- Cenotes: the Ruta de los Cenotes near Puerto Morelos is the closest cluster. Cenotes guide.
- Tulum: clifftop ruins about two and a half hours south by bus. Tulum guide.
Safety
The US State Department rates Quintana Roo at Level 2, “exercise increased caution”. Most visitors have trouble-free trips; use licensed taxis or apps, keep valuables in the hotel safe and be careful after dark away from the main tourist areas. Our safety guide covers the details.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need pesos in Cancun?
Yes for buses, markets and small food stalls. Cards are widely accepted in hotels, malls and larger restaurants. Paying in dollars usually means a worse rate.
How many days do you need in Cancun?
Four to five nights covers the beach plus two day trips, such as Isla Mujeres and Chichén Itzá. Add more if you want Tulum, cenotes or Holbox.
Is the Visitax included in my hotel price?
No. It’s charged separately by the state and paid online at visitax.gob.mx, even on all-inclusive packages.
Is the Hotel Zone or downtown better?
The Hotel Zone for beaches and resorts; downtown for lower prices, local food and bus connections.
