Cancun eSIM and Phone Guide: Staying Connected in Mexico

How to get mobile data in Cancun: travel eSIMs versus a local Telcel SIM, roaming from the US and Canada, and Wi-Fi in hotels.

The short answer

Check whether your home plan already covers Mexico. If it does not, install a travel eSIM before you leave. Then you have data for maps and ride apps the moment you land, which is the practical bit I care about.

Travel eSIMs

eSIM providers such as Airalo, Saily and Yesim sell Mexico data plans. Plans and prices change often, so compare current packages on their sites. Before you buy, check:

  • your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked;
  • which Mexican network the plan uses (Telcel has the widest coverage, including inland toward Chichén Itzá);
  • whether the plan includes hotspot use.

Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi, but keep it switched off until you arrive.

Local SIM cards

Telcel is Mexico’s largest network. SIMs and top-ups are sold at Telcel stores and OXXO convenience stores. You’ll need an unlocked phone.

Coverage

Coverage is strong in Cancun and along the coast to Tulum. It can be patchy on stretches of highway inland and inside some cenotes and ruins.
