The short answer

Base yourself where the sea is calm, and plan around the heat. That is the whole trick with kids here. A long east-coast beach looks great and can be a rough swim.

Where to stay

The north-facing beaches of the Hotel Zone and the Playa Mujeres coast have calmer water than the open east coast. Many all-inclusive resorts have kids’ clubs; check age limits and whether a hotel is adults-only before you book. See where to stay in Cancun.

Days out

  • Xcaret: an eco-park with underground rivers, animals and an evening show. See Xcaret.
  • Xel-Há: a natural inlet for snorkelling and floating. See Xel-Há.
  • Isla Mujeres: the ferry ride and Playa Norte’s shallow water. See Isla Mujeres from Cancun.
  • El Rey ruins: a small Maya site inside the Hotel Zone. See El Rey ruins.

Practical tips

  • Reef-safe sunscreen, hats and plenty of water.
  • Red or black flags mean no swimming.
  • Car seats aren’t guaranteed in taxis; ask your transfer company when booking.
  • Children over one pay a child fare on the Isla Mujeres ferry.
